“Two children
were injured, three others had their sneakers ripped from their feet...
Yet after each accident,
state inspectors or escalator mechanics found the escalators
met safety standards, and
the units were put back into service without any repairs
being made.” Reprinted

Every year thousands of people,
many of them children, are injured by escalators
in shopping malls, train stations,
office buildings, and sports arenas across the country.
Unfortunately, with many injuries
causing permanent disfigurement or disability, the effect on your business
can be devastating. The cost of litigation alone could be crippling, not
to mention the negative publicity.
But really disturbing is the
fact that as few as 15% of accidents are as a results of “unsafe acts”.
The majority are caused by worn, damaged or faulty
equipment. That is 85% of accidents that could be prevented.
More shocking is the archaic
way in which escalators are maintained - it is no wonder that accidents
happen, and with no apparent cause!
For example, the standard
method of identifying worn or damaged step components involves walking
on the steps and feeling for excess movement with your feet.
Similarly, the acceptable
procedure for checking step and combplate mesh is by holding a business
card on the end of a stick at the point where the steps meet the combplate
to see if it is drawn into the machine.
At Vertical Analysis we find
this both unscientific and unprofessional.
